Nasal in tone.
Printed over a vocal phrase that should sound through the nose. It lasts until cancelled, typically by natürlich (natural voice), which Wolf prints two bars later.
Also spelled: naeselnd
A deliberate distortion of timbre, usually for parody or caricature — a pompous, sneering or rustic voice. Use it briefly and give it a clear end: singers can sustain it only for a short phrase without strain, and the joke fades if it runs on. Mark natürlich where the normal voice returns.
Wolf, Eichendorff-Lieder, “Der Schreckenberger”, voice, m. 20: “näselnd”, cancelled by “natürlich” at m. 22.
Näselnd is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
