Movement; the pace or tempo of the music.
Printed above the staff in tempo directions: as a heading with a dance or genre (Mouvement de Marche, Mouvt de Valse), in returns (au Mouvt, 1er Mouvt, Reprenez le mouvement, Même mouvement), and often abbreviated Mouvt or Mouv. with a raised t. As a heading it holds until the next tempo word.
Abbreviations: mouv., mouvt.
In French scores mouvement means tempo, not only a section of a work, so 1er Mouvt is the first tempo, not the first movement. A heading such as Mouvement de Marche names a familiar pace and character at once. Choose the return formula carefully: au Mouvt undoes a local change, 1er Mouvt goes back to the opening tempo, and Même mouvement confirms that nothing changes.
Satie, Ludions, “La grenouille américaine”, voice, m. 1: “Mouvement de Marche” — the heading names the pace by genre.
Mouvement is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
