With warmth.
Printed above the staff over a phrase or as part of a heading (Mit Wärme), sometimes extended (“mit Wärme und Innigkeit”); bilingual editions pair it with con calore. It lasts until another character word.
Also spelled: mit waerme
Mit Wärme asks for a warm, generous tone and affectionate phrasing — more vibrato and body than plain espressivo, less urgency than leidenschaftlich. Mahler uses it to colour a single moment in the Adagietto; song composers use it as a heading. It works at any dynamic. If the tempo should move as well, add a tempo word, since warmth alone does not imply speed.
Mahler, Symphony No. 5, fourth movement (Adagietto), harp staff, m. 38: “mit Wärme.” after a pp, a bar before “Fliessender.”
Mit Wärme is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
