With; the German counterpart of con.
Opens a direction that names a resource or a manner — mit Dämpfer, mit Pedal, mit Ausdruck, mit Humor — printed over the part for technique and above the staff for character. A technique set with mit lasts until its counterpart cancels it (mit Dämpfer → ohne Dämpfer or Dämpfer ab); a manner lasts until the music changes character.
The German con. Besides character it names equipment and technique — mit Dämpfer, mit Holzschlägel, mit Bogen. For technique, always plan the cancellation (ohne, ab, gewöhnlich) and leave the player time to fit or remove the device. For character, mit plus a noun (mit Leidenschaft, mit Empfindung) is the idiom Schumann and Mahler use where an Italian score would write appassionato or espressivo.
Schumann, Frauenliebe und Leben, Op. 42, No. 5, “Helft mir, ihr Schwestern”, piano, m. 1: “Immer mit Pedal” — a technique instruction for the whole song, which is headed “Ziemlich schnell”.
Mit is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
