Moderately fast.
Printed as a heading above the first bar; it holds until the next tempo word. Older editions spell it mässig. It describes a moderately quick tempo, between Mäßig and Schnell.
Also spelled: mässig schnell, massig schnell
The German allegro moderato: brisk but unpressed. It is rarer than Mäßig geschwind or Ziemlich schnell, which say much the same, but it is plain and unambiguous. Add a character word if the music’s mood needs naming, and a metronome mark if the exact pace matters.
Cornelius, 6 Lieder, Op. 5, “Ode”, voice, m. 1: “Mässig schnell” heads the song.
Mäßig schnell is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
