Song.
Printed as a title (Lied ohne Worte, Altes Lied) and inside directions that refer to a song (“Tempo wie das erste Lied”). It is a label, not a performance instruction.
Lied means song, especially the German art song for voice and piano; as a title for instrumental music it promises a singing, simple melodic piece and asks for cantabile phrasing and a transparent accompaniment. Directions that point to another song are a cyclic device: they tell performers to recall that music’s tempo and character.
Schumann, Frauenliebe und Leben, Op. 42, “Nun hast du mir den ersten Schmerz getan”, m. 24: “Tempo wie das erste Lied.” — the closing piano music returns to the cycle’s first song.
Lied is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
