Broad and majestic.
Printed above the first system as a heading, often for an introduction, a closing apotheosis or a ceremonial movement, and in force until the next tempo word. In full scores it is repeated over the string group and in each part.
Broad, slow and majestic: the weight of maestoso at the slowest of tempos. It suits ceremonial music and the solemn return of a main theme at the end of a work. Because both words imply breadth, the risk is stasis; give the bass line purposeful motion and phrase toward clear goals. For grandeur that flows more easily, Andante maestoso is the gentler choice.
Largo maestoso is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
