Cornet.
The German label for the valved cornet, often with its key (Kornett in B, meaning B-flat). It is written in treble clef; in B-flat it sounds a whole step lower. Watch the spelling Cornett, which in English names the Renaissance cornett, called Zink in German.
Also spelled: Kornette, Cornett
In German-speaking music the cornet is chiefly a band and light-music instrument; orchestral scores borrowed it from French practice for warm, agile melodic brass lines. Write it like a B-flat trumpet part but expect a mellower, rounder tone that suits lyrical lines and quick passagework and blends readily with horns and woodwinds.
Kornett is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
