Castanets (German name).
The German name on castanet staves (Kastagnetten, older Castagnetten; Kast. later), on a single line with rhythms notated exactly and rolls written as tremolo; as with any unpitched instrument, only rhythm, accents and dynamics are shown.
Abbreviations: Kast.
Also spelled: Castagnetten
German scores use the word for the same Spanish clappers, short and dry and inseparable from Spanish dance, so use them where that colour is the point. Orchestral players often use castanets on a handle or a mounted pair for clean, fast rhythms; mark single strokes, rolls and accents clearly, and keep them sparing, since a few bars establish the colour.
Kastagnetten is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
