One beat to the bar.
A beating instruction printed above the staff (In one, in 1) where the bar should be felt as a single beat, typically in a fast 3/4 or 3/8; it holds until another beat instruction (in 3) or a tempo change implies a new pattern.
Abbreviations: in 1
Use it when the notated metre would invite too many beats: a fast waltz or scherzo beaten in three sounds heavy. It changes the feel, not the speed, by grouping each bar into one gesture, so the music needs bar-length phrasing to support it. Reverse it explicitly (in 3) where the music broadens.
In one is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
