Four beats to the bar.
Printed above the staff (In four, in 4) to set a four-beat pattern, often to subdivide a slow alla breve or to return to four after a passage in two; it holds until another beat instruction or tempo change.
Abbreviations: in 4
Use it where a slow tempo makes two beats per bar too wide to keep an ensemble together, or where rhythmic detail needs a clearer pulse. It changes the conductor’s pattern, not the metronome speed. In slow music for large forces, subdividing the beat helps prevent rushing and ragged entries.
In four is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
