Heartfelt.
A character word printed at the head of a song or over a phrase, often joined to another (“Einfach und herzlich”). It lasts until a new character word.
Heartfelt, warm, sincere — affection without sentimentality. Joined to einfach it asks for direct feeling with no affectation: plain phrasing, warm tone, little rubato. It suits folk-like melodies and intimate songs; if the music needs a more inward, private warmth, innig is the closer word.
Wolf, Eichendorff-Lieder, “Erwartung”, voice, m. 1: “Einfach und herzlich” heads the song.
Herzlich is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
