Harp.
Labels a two-stave system braced like a piano (Harp, Hp. or Hrp. later; Harps, or Harp I and II, when there are two). Pedal settings are shown as letter names or a diagram at the start and before changes, and harmonics are marked with a small circle, sounding an octave above the written note.
Abbreviations: Hp., Hrp.
Also spelled: Harps
Written at sounding pitch. Seven pedals each set one note-name in every octave, so think in scales: chromatic lines are awkward, enharmonic respellings are normal, and each change needs a moment. Glissandi, harmonics and arpeggiated chords are idiomatic; dense, fast chromatic writing is not. In a full orchestra the harp is easily covered, so give it exposed moments or a second harp.
Harp is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
