Guitar (German name).
The German name on guitar staves (Gitarre; older spelling Guitarre), a single treble-clef staff written an octave above sounding pitch. Fingerings and string indications follow the same conventions as in any guitar part.
Also spelled: Guitarre
The guitar is quiet and its notes decay fast, so in an orchestra it needs very light surroundings; Mahler pairs it with the mandolin in the serenade-like fourth movement of his Seventh Symphony. Write it in treble clef an octave above sounding pitch, check chord shapes against the tuning E A D G B E, and avoid dense voicings that six strings and one hand cannot reach.
Gitarre is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
