Walking, at a walking pace.
Printed as a heading, sometimes followed by a metronome figure in parentheses; it holds until the next tempo word. It is the German rendering of andante, and appears more often as In gehender Bewegung (“in walking motion”).
A walking pace: the literal sense that andante once had. Schoenberg uses it with a metronome mark to fix the speed; earlier composers wrote In gehender Bewegung. Choose it when you want the pulse of steady steps rather than the expressive associations Andante has acquired.
Schoenberg, Das Buch der hängenden Gärten, Op. 15, “Da meine Lippen reglos sind und brennen”, voice, m. 1: “Gehend”, followed by a metronome figure.
Gehend is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
