Stretched out.
Printed above the staff, sometimes in parentheses, over a note or phrase to be stretched; it usually applies locally and is cancelled by a tempo, Tempo I or the next tempo word.
Stretched: drawing out a phrase or note beyond its strict value, usually for expressive emphasis. Wolf uses it in songs for a word that should linger, and Wagner in an accompaniment to slow a gesture. Because it is local, mark the return to tempo soon after.
Wagner, Wesendonck-Lieder, No. 3, “Im Treibhaus”, piano, m. 54: “(gedehnt)” at pp, in a song headed “Langsam und schwer”.
Gedehnt is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
