Furiously.
Printed beside a loud dynamic or joined to a tempo word in a heading — Allegro furioso, Presto furioso — at a wild, driven passage. In a heading it lasts for the section; otherwise until the next character direction.
Furioso asks for fury: frenzied speed and violence, the music pushed to the edge of control. In headings it implies a very fast tempo as well as a character. Balakirev’s Presto furioso for the final section of Islamey is typical: a virtuoso finish at full tilt. Keep it for extreme music, and be sure the writing can be played at the speed the word invites.
Balakirev, Islamey (Oriental Fantasy), piano, m. 282: “Presto furioso” launches the final section of a work that opens “Allegro agitato”.
Furioso is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
