Whip (slapstick).
Labels the whip or slapstick (Frusta) on a single line. Each note is one crack, so the part shows single strokes with their dynamics rather than sustained notes.
Two hinged wooden boards snapped together give a sharp, gunshot-like crack — the most startling short sound the percussion section can make. Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G opens with a single crack of it. Use it as punctuation, one stroke placed at the right moment, rather than as a rhythmic pattern; repeated, it quickly turns comic.
Frusta is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
