Continuing.
Printed over a part, usually in parentheses, to show that a line carries on something begun elsewhere (“(den Gesang fortsetzend)”, continuing the song); bilingual editions give the Italian beside it. It lasts for the continuing phrase.
Fortsetzend tells the player that their phrase continues another part’s line — typically the piano taking over the voice’s melody — so it should be shaped with the same breath and tone, not as new material. It is a useful hint wherever a melody passes between instruments; name what is being continued.
Mahler, Kindertotenlieder, “Oft denk’ ich, sie sind nur ausgegangen”, piano, m. 21: “(den Gesang fortsetzend)” beside the Italian “(continuare il canto)”.
Fortsetzend is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
