Only the players at the first desks.
Printed over string parts (first desks, 1st desks, or a count such as first 2 desks) where only the front stands play; it holds until all, tutti or another desk count, and the remaining players rest meanwhile.
Abbreviations: 1st desks
Use it for a small, refined group drawn from the section’s leading players, often in exposed or delicate passages; it gives a chamber-music sound inside the orchestra. Say how many desks if the number matters, since first desks alone leaves it open. The back desks are silent meanwhile, so write tutti where they return and make sure their re-entry is not exposed.
First desks is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
