Festive.
A heading printed above the first staff of a movement, prelude or chorale-like section, usually with a tempo word. It governs the piece or section rather than a single phrase.
Festlich asks for ceremonial brilliance: full, ringing tone, firm rhythm, an unhurried grandeur suited to processions and celebrations. It differs from feierlich, which is solemn and devotional rather than festive. Brass, timpani and bright keys help it. Give a moderate tempo word, since festive music that rushes loses its dignity.
Festlich is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
