Somewhat quick.
Printed as a song or movement heading above the first bar; it holds until the next tempo word. As a heading it is an absolute tempo — “rather quick” — not a comparative.
One of Schubert’s most frequent headings — “Ungeduld”, “Die Post”, “Täuschung” and “Der Atlas” all carry it — for a lively tempo that still lets words and harmony register. It roughly corresponds to allegretto or allegro moderato. Choose it over geschwind when the song has a narrative or a harmonic event the listener must not lose.
Schubert, Winterreise, D. 911, No. 13, “Die Post”, voice, m. 1: “Etwas geschwind” heads the song.
Etwas geschwind is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
