A drum of unspecified kind.
On its own, Drum labels a staff only where the type is left open or obvious from context; scores normally specify — Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Tenor Drum — with abbreviations such as S.D. and B.D. on later systems. Unpitched drums are written on a single line or a percussion staff.
Also spelled: Drums
Always say which drum you mean: snare for crisp rhythm and rolls, bass drum for weight and impact, tenor drum for a dull, snare-less military tone, timpani if you want pitch. Name the sticks — wooden, felt, brushes — when the default would be wrong, and remember that drums speak instantly but sustain only through rolls.
Drum is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
