Cymbals (French name).
French for cymbals, abbreviated Cymb. The plural normally means a pair clashed together; Cymbale suspendue, or simply Cymbale, asks for one hanging cymbal played with sticks or mallets. Laissez vibrer or étouffez decides whether a crash rings or is stopped, and tremolo strokes on a suspended cymbal mean a roll.
Abbreviations: Cymb.
Also spelled: Cymbale
A pair clashed together gives the climactic crash; a suspended cymbal rolled with soft mallets gives the shimmering swell Debussy and Ravel used so often, and touched with a stick it gives a light, bright tick. Say which you mean, name the beater (baguette, baguette d’éponge), and mark how long it rings — an unmarked crash decays for several seconds.
Cymbales is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
