Verse; stanza or episode between refrains.
Printed above the vocal line or system where a verse begins — Couplet, 2e couplet, 2° COUPLET — and in navigation directions such as au 2e couplet (go on to the second verse). It labels a section rather than asking for a way of playing, and lasts until the refrain or the next verse heading.
Also spelled: couplets
Couplet is the strophe of a French song and, in the rondeau, the contrasting episode between returns of the refrain. Labelling verses helps singers and players navigate repeats and first and second endings, especially when different words share the same music. In an instrumental rondeau, varying each couplet in key or texture while the refrain stays fixed is the form’s main resource.
Viardot, “Les filles de Cadix”, voice, m. 89: “2° COUPLET.” marks the start of the second verse.
Couplet is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
