Confident.
Printed over a vocal line or above the staff as a character word for a phrase. It lasts until the next character or tempo marking.
It asks for trust and assurance: steady, warm tone and confident delivery, without the hesitation or uncertain rubato that would undercut it. In song it often matches a text of reassurance or faith, and it is most effective where a phrase should sound settled after doubt. Boulanger sets it two bars before a rit. in one of her Jammes songs.
Boulanger, Clairières dans le ciel, “Nous nous aimerons tant”, voice, m. 35: “confiant”, two bars before a “rit.”.
Confiant is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
