With firmness.
Printed beside the dynamic or under a phrase that must be played steadily and firmly; it holds for the passage and lapses at the next character direction. Deciso and risoluto appear in the same places.
Also spelled: fermezza
Con fermezza asks for steadiness and firmness: secure rhythm, unwavering tone, no rubato or hesitation. Where deciso stresses decision at the attack, fermezza stresses holding the line steady afterwards. It is useful after a free or hesitant passage to restore a firm pulse, and it combines naturally with marcato; it does not by itself ask for loudness, so add the dynamic you want.
Con fermezza is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
