Calming: growing calmer, usually with an easing of tempo (sich beruhigend, calming down).
Printed above the staff where agitation subsides, often as allmählich sich beruhigend or wieder beruhigend; it describes a gradual change that continues until a new tempo or character word, usually a calmer heading such as Ruhig.
Calming down — tempo and temperament settling together after an outburst. Mahler uses it to steer a turbulent passage back toward a calmer state without a sudden break. Give it enough bars to work, and mark the destination (Ruhig, Tempo I) clearly.
Mahler, Symphony No. 5, first movement (Trauermarsch), m. 233: “Allmählich sich beruhigend.”
Beruhigend is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
