Timpani sticks.
Printed over a cymbal, bass drum, tam-tam or other percussion part to have it played with timpani sticks instead of its usual beater; it lasts until another beater is named.
Timpani sticks on a suspended cymbal give a soft, swelling roll without the clash of a crash; on bass drum or tam-tam they give a firmer, more defined stroke than the usual large beater. Say whether you mean hard or soft timpani sticks, and give the player time to pick them up.
Bacchette di timpani is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
