With coquetry.
Printed over a vocal line at a phrase where a character teases or flirts. It sets a manner for the phrase and lasts until the next character marking.
It asks for playful flirtation: light, teasing delivery with small hesitations, coy rubato and pointed diction. It belongs to the theatre and to salon and Spanish-flavoured song, where a character is drawn in a few phrases; Viardot uses it at p in her Les filles de Cadix. Use it where the text supports it — outside a dramatic context it can seem affected.
Viardot, “Les filles de Cadix” (VWV 1135), voice, m. 36: “avec coquetterie”, at p; the song opens “Vivace.”.
Avec coquetterie is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
