Excited, agitated.
A heading word or a mid-piece character word, printed above the staff; Schumann intensifies it as “Sehr aufgeregt”. It lasts until another character or tempo word.
Agitated, excited, worked up — the German agitato, implying nervous restlessness and usually a quick tempo. Schumann makes it the whole character of a piece and still marks it p, so agitation does not have to be loud. Pair it with a tempo word or a metronome mark if pace matters.
