Growing.
Printed below the staff like cresc., sometimes beside it in bilingual editions, and often followed by dashes to show the extent of the growth; it ends at the target dynamic.
Growing, swelling: the German crescendo, with a sense of organic growth. Use it where you want a long, natural build, and pair it with a target dynamic so the performer knows where the growth arrives. Like cresc. it can be drawn out over many bars with dashes. Zunehmend and anschwellend are close synonyms.
Cornelius, Weihnachtslieder, Op. 8, “Die Könige”, piano, m. 12: “anwachsend” with “cresc.” beside it.
Anwachsend is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
