At a walking pace, devotionally.
Printed above the first system as a heading, most often in organ, choral or devotional pieces and in slow movements of hymn-like character, and in force until the next tempo word.
Religioso describes a devotional manner more than a speed: a steady, reverent walk, legato and sustained, with restrained dynamics and no theatrical rubato. It suits chorale-like textures and slow movements meant to evoke prayer. The word carries a 19th-century devotional flavour; if you want simple dignity without that colouring, Andante sostenuto or a plain Andante with legato markings does the same work.
Andante religioso is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
