The melody leaps a fourth and spends the next three bars filling it in by step — the classic debt and repayment. The bass declines to compete: steps and thirds through first inversions, the leading tone rising in the tenor at the peak. Where the soprano itself carries the leading tone near the close, it rises home, and the supporting voices stay out of its way.
