What it teaches

The gesture is a pair or it is nothing: the applied 6/5 on the raised tone leans into the supertonic — minor, shadowed — and then the identical lean, one step lower, lands on the tonic. The soprano carries both sevenths and both falls; the bass carries both leading tones and both rises. Two semitone pairs, mirrored, and home is found rather than asserted.

At the keyboard

The three upper voices of the model realization fit under one hand. Play the soprano alone: D held and dropped to C, C held and dropped to B. The Fonte’s descent is audible in one voice before you add the rest. Carry it into C major, D major.
