A fingering number sits immediately adjacent to its notehead, on the side opposite the stem, and is the innermost item in the stack.

A note carrying both fingering and a staccato dot renders the staccato dot closer to the notehead than the fingering number — per the corrected mechanism, this can only happen from a genuine VexFlow version change to the category table, not from Gradus's own call order.
