Rule
Gradus GE-412 · cite this code — it is permanent. Rule id vs-dynamic-lyric-stack
Lyrics sit immediately below the staff; dynamics, when present on the same system, are pushed further below the lyric line.
A vocal line with both a syllable and a dynamic mark at the same note renders the dynamic directly on top of or touching the lyric syllable instead of below it.
Gould, Behind Bars, ch. 'Vocal music' / lyric placement conventions; Ross, The Art of Music Engraving on combining lyrics with dynamics in vocal scores.
This rule is about where marks land on the page, so it can only be judged after engraving. Collision and spacing faults live here.
Gradus GE-412 — When both a dynamic mark and a lyric occupy the space below a staff, they must stack (dynamic further out) rather than overlap. Gradus Engraving Rulebook v1.0. https://gradusmusic.com/engraving/rule/vs-dynamic-lyric-stack
