Rule
Gradus GE-365 · cite this code — it is permanent. Rule id tie-chord-outer-inner-direction
When a chord is tied, each notehead's tie is an independent curve, not one shared curve at one direction: the outermost noteheads (highest and lowest pitch in the chord) curve away from the chord body — upward for the top note, downward for the bottom note — while inner notes' ties are nudged so no two arcs touch or cross. This is an elaboration of, not identical to, the single-note stem-opposite rule.
Gould illustrates chord ties with outer notes curving outward and inner notes closing tightly to avoid overlap; Ross describes the same nesting discipline for multi-note tie groups.
This rule is about where marks land on the page, so it can only be judged after engraving. Collision and spacing faults live here.
Gradus GE-365 — Chord ties must curve outward from the outer noteheads, with inner noteheads' curves kept clear of each other (the outer/inner convention). Gradus Engraving Rulebook v1.0. https://gradusmusic.com/engraving/rule/tie-chord-outer-inner-direction
